It’s only been a few months since President Trump’s last attack on SNAP (or food stamps), but now he’s at it again with his cruel attempts to take food stamps away from struggling families in order to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations — even though studies show that food stamps boost both families and our economy.

This is the THIRD TIME he has undermined the wishes of Congress and tried to propose a rule that would limit the number of families that could receive SNAP and reduced the amount of benefits recipients could receive.

This hurts kids. This hurts our families. And this hurts our economy.

Dear President Trump and Secretary Perdue,

On behalf of MomsRising, which serves over a million members around the country, we want to take a firm stand against the USDA’s Notice of Proposed Rule regarding Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program (SNAP) Standardization of State Heating and Cooling Standard Utility Allowances.

Moms, dads, and concerned people from around the country are speaking out against this harmful, unnecessary, and overreaching proposed policy because it will lead to hard working families not being able to access the food they desperately need and would cut SNAP benefits by $4.5 billion over five years.

The proposed rule would exacerbate the struggles many low-income people have paying for costs of both food and utilities. 1 in 5 struggling families on SNAP would see their benefits cut by $75—which is a whole lot of money when the average SNAP recipient receives about $127 a month or $1.40 a meal. Another 8,000 households would lose SNAP all together.

SNAP plays a critical role in addressing hunger and food insecurity in our community. It is the first line of defense against hunger for families who are just trying to make ends meet. SNAP is especially essential in rural communities. Nationally, food stamp participation is highest overall among households in rural areas and in 23% of rural counties, at least 20% of households participate in SNAP.

We want our elected officials to do more for struggling families and children, not less!

This rule would have harmful impacts on health and well-being, as well as on the economy. The proposed rule is flawed and should be withdrawn immediately.
