Over 3,500 MomsRising members in New Mexico have signed our petition urging Senator Heinrich to support paid family leave and the federal FAMILY Act, and late last year, we delivered your signatures!

On February 5, 2018 - the 25th anniversary of FMLA - Sen. Heinrich announced his co-sponsorship of the FAMILY Act! When you take action, we deliver!

“New Mexicans should not face the impossible choice of caring for their health and family or keeping their job,” said Sen. Heinrich. “Yet, the reality is that hard working people in New Mexico and across the country have to make this decision if they need medical treatment or if they have to take care of a newborn or sick parent. Meanwhile, the lack of a paid leave program strains employers and the economy. The FAMILY Act will ensure families and businesses have the stability and economic security they need to succeed.”

As you know, when only 15% of all workers have access to paid family leave through their employer, it's a big problem for the health of our families and the health of our economy. Nearly 1 in 4 mothers return to work within 10 days of giving birth and 1 in 5 retirees leave the workforce earlier than planned to care for an ill spouse or another family member. Many families end up cobbling together vacation time and sick days to cover time away from work for caregiving and then cross their fingers that nothing goes wrong.

We need a national paid family and medical leave policy that checks ALL the boxes: It needs to be ACCESSIBLE to all workers, offer a MEANINGFUL length of leave, be AFFORDABLE for workers, employers, and the government, INCLUSIVE in defining family, and offer job PROTECTION. The FAMILY Act is a step in the right direction toward ensuring paid family leave that meets everyone's needs!

I know you agree that whether it’s to care for a newborn you swear already smiles, a mom who is ill, or a spouse battling cancer, being there for family is what matters. Our families shouldn't have to give up a paycheck to do it.
