Dear Senators,
Thank you so much for your strong support and leadership in the Washington State Legislature on behalf of Washington families. As a constituent and a member of MomsRising, I am writing to share my gratitude for the investments in the Senate Democrat's proposed 2023-25 budget. Just like flowers need sunlight and water to grow, families and communities do best when our public investments are strong.
We are especially want to share our gratitude for the robust investments in child care and early learning, the paid family and medical leave reserve fund, and ongoing support for the Working Families Tax Credit program. We believe these investments taken together will strengthen our state's care economy and family's economic security.
As the Senate finalizes its budget, we ask that you consider amendments to appropriate some additional investments that are critical for working families and caregivers:
- $250,000 to fund research and analysis at the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Governance to examine the impacts of the state's paid family and medical leave program's limited employment protections on equitable program uptake
- $1 million to expand infant and early childhood mental health consultation to child care providers and families across the state that is culturally and linguistically responsive
- $7.2 million to fund House Bill 1477, making important technical corrections and adjustments to the Working Families Tax Credit to allow for equitable access, particularly for survivors of domestic violence
We again thank you for your leadership and deep work over these past months to develop a sustainable and resilient budget for the years ahead.
Sincerely,
