Dear President Trump and Members of Congress,
Protect the health care, nutrition, and housing programs that lift up our families and economy.
Some lawmakers are proposing to add strict work-related requirements to programs that provide critical supports to millions of families to help them meet basic needs. Taking away someone’s health care, food, or housing because they are unemployed or face significant health or other barriers to work won’t help them find work any faster, nor will it help them keep the job they have.
Imposing unnecessary and unhelpful barriers to vital health care, nutrition, and housing assistance programs only sets our families and economy back. This would disproportionately affect low-income families who are just trying to get by and pull themselves out of poverty. No one should be punished for caring for a loved one, being unemployed, or having a chronic illness or disability that prevents them from having regular employment or engage in prescribed work-related activities that may not fit their circumstances. Our children will be affected as well as our economy.
Instead we should be funding job creation and training programs, raising wages, ensuring high-quality, affordable childcare, and passing paid family and medical leave so we can care for ourselves and our loved ones when they need us most and strengthening health care, housing, and nutrition programs.
Stand with me and protect the programs that matter most to our families’ health care, nutrition, and well-being.
Sincerely,
