Ban poverty, not books!

Moms, parents, and caregivers are outraged and horrified by the work of extremists to ban books in our local schools and public libraries. We are writing to you to say loud and clear: book bans have no place in Washington State.

Hundreds of books are already off the shelves in other states where extremist organizations have infiltrated local and state governments, and here in Washington we are already seeing local libraries and school boards move to ban books that include LGBTQIA+ and stories from People of the Global Majority¹.

Our tax dollars should be used to ban childhood poverty, not books.

Urge your lawmakers to act this legislative session to pass SB 6208 and HB 2331 to reject book bans and ensure every child has access to stories they can see themselves in!

Dear Washington State Legislators:

Stories are powerful - they make us feel less alone, they make us feel affirmed and seen, and they change the course of history. That is why moms, parents, and caregivers are outraged and horrified by the work of extremists to ban books in our local schools and public libraries.

We urge you to support SB 6208 and HB 2331 - bills that would ensure professional, consistent, and equitable decisions are being made about the books that children have access to in public schools.

We are writing to you to say loud and clear: book bans have no place in Washington State. We are already seeing local libraries and school boards move to ban books that center LGBTQIA+ and and stories from People of the Global Majority¹ in our local schools and public libraries.

This is a discriminative tactic that perpetuates harmful rhetoric to our children and impacts their safety and the quality of their education. Regardless of our color, zip-codes, or backgrounds, we want our children to have an honest, high-quality education.

Our tax dollars should be used to ban childhood poverty, not books. As parents, we do not want to see public funds wasted banning wonderful, educational books like Rosa Parks, Julian is a Mermaid, and Festival of Colors. These books and others on extremists' target list are essential to a well-rounded education. Educators' time and resources would be better used to solve real issues impacting students, parents, and education professionals throughout the state.

We urge you to take action in the 2024 legislative session and pass SB 6208 and HB 2331. Let's ensure that every child in our state has access to diverse stories that help them see themselves in the world.
