Dear Senator,
I am writing as your constituent to express my concern and alarm following your recent NO vote on S.Amdt.4290 to H.R.7148.
Of the $1 trillion cut from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act in H.R. 1, $170 billion has since been allocated to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Extreme cuts to Medicaid have directly paid for separating families, human rights abuses, and terrifying hardworking immigrants—people essential to our care workforce, our economy and our future—as well as violating American civil liberties, terrorizing cities, and killing American citizens.
At a direct expense, 15 million people will have their health coverage terminated altogether. When millions of people become uninsured, it puts a strain on the entire health care system, causing health care costs to rise across the board and even forcing hundreds of hospitals, maternity wards, and nursing homes to close. At least 5.4 million more people are estimated to go into medical debt—and families whose health coverage is terminated altogether could see their medical debt increase by as much as $22,280
Moreover, immigrants are a critical part of the care workforce in our state. Attacks on immigrant families are not only cruel, but also make finding affordable, high-quality child care, elder care, and health care more difficult.
As making ends meet is harder than ever for many families across our nation, it’s a stark contrast to reallocate billions of dollars from programs that allow families to build good lives, go to work, and contribute to our communities to an immigration enforcement agency stoking cruelty, fear, and violence.
I am deeply disappointed and very concerned about how funding for ICE at the expense of our health care will impact our community and our country. I stand with moms, parents, caregivers, and families across the state in urging you to use our hard earned tax dollars to lift our state’s families by investing in health care, not to terrify immigrants who are critical to our families, communities, our care workforce, and our state’s economy. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, NOT cuts to healthcare and NOT cruelty.
