I am writing in strong support of HB 1075/SB 5249, to allow everyone to receive life saving a cash boost from the Working Families Tax Credit, regardless of their age.
I believe everyone deserves a yearly boost, whether they are a young person working their way through college, or a grandparent putting in long hours to make rent. The WFTC has already put millions of dollars back in the pockets of working people and helped to balance our state’s inequitable tax code. However, the current age restrictions for workers without kids limits payments to those who are 25-65 years old.
From youth working to support their families, to seniors still in the workforce, people with low incomes are all trying to make ends meet. We urge you to expand the Working Families Tax Credit by removing the age restriction for people without dependent children, allowing anyone over the age of 18 to qualify for this life saving cash.
Young adults across our state are struggling to make ends meet. More than half of 18-24 year olds across WA cannot meet their basic needs, and the young people who would benefit from this expansion are more likely to be people of color or impacted by the foster system. More seniors are working now than at any time in the last 25 years, and social security is not enough to cover the basics. A cash boost from the Working Families Tax Credit would help younger and older workers to get by.
This expansion would benefit 210,000 more households, expanding the reach of out state tax credit by over 50%.
We know this is just the start of our mission to make sure every Washingtonian can put food on the table, pay for emergencies, and go to sleep with peace of mind.
We urge your support!
Thank you for all that you do,
