Dear Member of Congress,
I am writing to urge you to swiftly pass two commonsense bills: the Dream Act and the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act. Together, these measures would make our immigration system more balanced, fair, humane, and reflective of our country’s shared values.
Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders have lived in the United States for most of their lives. They are our neighbors, caregivers, teachers, nurses, and small business owners, people who enrich our communities and strengthen our economy. The bipartisan Dream Act, reintroduced by Senators Dick Durbin and Lisa Murkowski, would finally offer longtime community members a clear pathway to citizenship, replacing uncertainty with stability and opportunity.
The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act would ensure that the U.S. upholds fundamental human rights and due process and protects vulnerable individuals, like pregnant and nursing women, from unjust incarceration. The reports of inhumane conditions and rights abuses in immigrant detention are deeply disturbing.
Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security – NOT cruelty.
Both bills reflect a balanced approach to immigration. They would make our communities safer, our economy stronger, and our nation truer to our values. Passing them would mean that longtime family and community members and co-workers and caregivers would have stability and safety in the places they call home. It would help rebuild trust, strengthen local economies, and ensure that our immigration system reflects the best of who we are as a nation.
