Dear Governors and Mayors:
Our schools need more counselors, nurses, social workers, and educators who have the training they need to effectively support students NOT more cops.
School counselors, nurses, social workers, and psychologists are trained to support children, and in schools where these professionals are able to provide services we see improved attendance rates, better academic achievement, and higher graduation rates. These same schools also see lower rates of suspension, expulsion, and other disciplinary incidents. The data on this is clear. The presence of school-based mental health providers doesn't just improve outcomes for students, but also improves overall school safety.
We urge you to
- End the Regular Presence of Law Enforcement in Schools;
- Restrict the Role of Law Enforcement that are Called in to Schools
- Increased Funding more mental health professionals in schools including counselors, social workers, school psychologists, and nurses.
- Reimagine Safe Schools through Positive Safety and Discipline Measures.
Now is the time to invest in all of our kids. We urge you to exercise bold leadership in both ending the regular presence of police in schools and investing in student supports.
We look forward to your response and welcome the opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss these issues further as soon as possible.
Respectfully,
