Dear State Board Member:
Because schools are an important space to provide young people the chance to learn in a safe and supportive environment, it is essential to ensure students have the opportunity to have a healthy and active day, every day.
The physical health of a child is critical to other aspects of learning and is integral to the well-rounded education that all students deserve. Healthful Living and physical education are essential to students’ physical health, and have a number of important benefits, including, but not limited to helping students build and maintain healthy bodies; reducing the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases; improving self-confidence; reducing depression and anxiety; lower chronic absenteeism; improving academic performance and classroom behavior; and teaching healthy habits for life. In addition, strong local wellness policies are critical to ensuring schools are actively working to meet standards to promote student nutrition, health, and well-being.
All students deserve to have a healthy and active school day. Many students are disproportionately affected by health issues, often due to barriers outside of the classroom. As heart disease, stroke, obesity, and diabetes rates increase in our state, it is critical that we help young people achieve healthy outcomes. While students head back to school, let’s prioritize their health and well-being.
As you and your colleagues have conversations about addressing the needs of the whole child, please consider the importance of building a healthy school environment through the Healthful Living curriculum, physical education, and strong local wellness policies, which all play an important the role in providing students the best opportunity to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
Sincerely,
