Dear Member of Congress,
As moms and those who love them, we are horrified by the escalating violence being inflicted on our communities by ICE and CBP agents. We mourn the lives of Alex Pretti, a nurse who dedicated his life to caring for veterans; Renee Nicole Good, a mother, wife, and poet; and the many immigrants who have died in unsafe detention centers across the country. We are also horrified by the treatment of Liam Ramos, the boy in the bunny hat, who is just one of the more than 3800 children who have been held in detention since the beginning of the Trump administration.
It’s unconscionable that extreme cuts were made to Medicaid and other key programs that open the doors for people to thrive in order to pay for human rights abuses, spreading violent chaos, separating families, and terrifying children and hardworking immigrants – people essential to our care workforce, our economy, and our future.
We call on you to vote NO on any additional funding for ICE – and to put in place strong accountability measures that should include:
- Requiring the Department of Homeland Security’s full cooperation with state and local authorities conducting investigations into the actions of immigration agents, including investigations into the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti;
- Prohibiting federal immigration enforcement agents from concealing their identities during law enforcement operations outside of specific circumstances and ensuring accountability for federal agents’ lawless actions by providing civil liability for violations of constitutional and civil rights and ending qualified immunity;
- Prohibiting civil immigration enforcement actions at sensitive locations that are crucial to our communal safety and wellbeing such as schools and day care centers, places of worship, health care providers, and polling places;
- Prohibiting the unlawful practice and policy of arresting people without a warrant, in accordance with the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the INA’s warrantless arrest statute, 8 USC § 1357(a)(2), and ceasing the practice and policy of entering homes without a judicial warrant;
- Ending funding for family jails and detention centers like Dilley in Texas, where Liam and other children are held in unsafe conditions.
Additionally, Congress should claw back the more than $100 billion in unspent DHS funds from the reconciliation bill and reverse the cuts made to healthcare, which are driving up costs for families. Our nation needs a safe and orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security, not cuts to healthcare, and not cruelty or violence.
Sincerely,
