Dear member of Congress:
SNAP has been proven time and time again to lift businesses, families, and the economy, as SNAP funds are proven to be fairly immediately spent by consumers in local communities. In fact, right now two-thirds of our GDP is based on consumer spending.
So we call on you to reject cuts, additional work requirements, or barriers to access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps). Every family – no matter where we live – should have the opportunity and tools, including SNAP, to build a good life. But the rising costs of basic things we need to work and take care of our families – like the price of eggs and other groceries – hold us back. Protecting and strengthening SNAP would mean more money in peoples’ pockets, allowing us to provide for our families, which in turn lifts businesses and the economy.
SNAP is a proven program that lifts up families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities at a time of rising costs and grocery prices. In fact, SNAP serves approximately 40 million people, including 1 out of every 5 children in our country.
SNAP allows millions to better afford groceries during a time of rising costs. SNAP already has work restrictions. Most SNAP beneficiaries who can work already do work, but do not earn enough money to make ends meet. It’s important that those who can’t work–because of care responsibilities, disability, or age–also are able to access this important nutrition assistance free of barriers.
We reject all attempts to pass a law that gives massive tax breaks to billionaires and wealthy corporations while cutting nutrition programs to pay for them. People need to be able to work, take care of their families, and contribute to their communities – and SNAP allows people to better do that so it should not be cut.
Sincerely,
