Nothing says summer like an ice cream sandwich and there’s nothing more American than being in the sandwich generation. Being in the sandwich generation means that sometimes we’re pressed between caring for a critically ill aging parent and welcoming a new child simultaneously. Through it all, having access to paid family and medical leave is vital.

This summer we have a chance to pass paid family and medical leave and bring relief to sandwich generation families struggling with being there when a new child arrives or in a moment of critical illness for an older adult or yourself. Paid family and medical leave is critical for the economic security and well being of our families. It is key to bettering businesses and our economy and will lead to long term health and stability for our nation. Let’s pass paid leave this summer.

Demand that Congress pass and fully fund permanent and comprehensive paid family and medical leave now.

Dear members of Congress,

Now is the time for action. Working families, including those in the sandwich generation, need workplace justice policies like paid family and medical leave which address racial justice, gender equity and disability rights. We ask that you pass, a fully funded paid family and medical leave program in the next care infrastructure bill and that it is set up to be successful so that workers and families can balance the needs of work and their caregiving responsibilities in times of critical health crisis, as needs arise from a military deployment, and when a new child arrives. This can make a difference in people’s lives.

Study after study shows that passing paid family and medical leave will boost our economy, lift businesses, and help families. It’s time.

Paid family and medical leave is an economic necessity. Caregiving families can spend upwards of 20 percent of their personal income, and get pushed out of much-needed jobs due to providing unpaid critical care to loved ones in times of need, so having paid family and medical leave is an obvious solution that boosts employee retention and economic security. Paid family and medical leave will help improve the lives of working families as well as ensure our economy and businesses prosper.

Let’s invest in families, our businesses, our economy, and our country by investing in care -- and let’s start by including robust funding for comprehensive and inclusive paid family and medical leave in the care infrastructure bill.
