As your constituent, I am writing you to urge your support for SHB 2511 or the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. Time is running out to pass this critical bill!
Domestic workers take care of our children, our families, and our homes, but they are left out of the most basic of labor protections meant to ensure workplace safety and prevent harassment. The Domestic Workers Bill of Rights would change that. The amended bill provides protection against sexual harassment and discrimination, providing domestic workers:
-
Basic privacy protections by ensuring that cameras are prohibited in restrooms and other private spaces
-
The right to retain personal effects and legal documentation
-
Freedom from adverse actions and retaliation for exercising his or her rights
These are basic and essential protections. All other matters, such as wage and hour law, will be addressed in a workgroup for legislative consideration in future years.
You may also have heard that some employers feel that au pairs should be exempt. I strongly disagree. Au pairs are just as vulnerable to abuse as any other domestic worker. They are required to work and live in the homes of their host family employers. The concerns raised by host families are economic and we have addressed those through the removal of wage and hour law. Please do not exempt au pairs from basic harassment protections.
As your constituent, I urge your support for SHB 2511.
Sincerely,
