Everyone should have access to food and health care. Period.

But Republican leadership in Congress is demanding deep cuts to programs that would leave millions hungry and uninsured, and threatening to default on our national debt unless they get what they want: Cuts to programs that families and our economy need.

This is ridiculous. Instead of taking health care and food away from children, families, people with disabilities, and seniors, Congress should do more to make the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share of taxes so we can invest that money in programs struggling families and our economy need.

Dear Congress,

Everyone should have access to food and health care. Period.

The recent Republican proposals that create barriers to access and cut funding for SNAP and Medicaid are unacceptable. In addition to helping families, research shows that SNAP and Medicaid have a high return on investment by boosting our economy. Further, work reporting requirements are especially harmful to moms and our nation’s families. The majority of low-income people who can work already do and SNAP already has stringent work requirements and time limits for the vast majority of recipients. Among those who are not working, most report illness or disability, caregiving responsibilities, being recently divorced, escaping an abusive relationship, or going to school as a reason for not working.

Increasing work reporting requirements and harsh time limits have been shown to take assistance away from people who work irregular hours, have caretaking responsibilities, or multiple jobs (many of whom are women and moms), or who simply couldn’t cut through all the red tape to get the necessary paperwork. Lost wages and job loss often occurs as a result of an individual’s or family member’s health issue, the latter of which especially affects women, who disproportionately serve as family caregivers. Additionally, many parents who have heavy caregiving responsibilities become gig workers, such as drivers and delivery workers, and may not get regular pay stubs or documentation. Seniors and people with disabilities who have fewer job opportunities would also be harmed by harsh increased work and reporting requirements.

If these policies were to be adopted, an estimated 3 million adults, many of whom are parents, and 4 million children who live in these households would see their household’s food assistance fall at a time when families are struggling to put food on the table due to rising food costs.

We call on our elected leaders to protect the nutrition and health care of struggling families by passing policies that remove barriers to access, not increase them! Instead of cutting SNAP and Medicaid, taking health care and food away from children and families who need it most, Congress should do more to make the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share so no family in this country of enormous wealth goes hungry.
